Control and monitoring of the Tobacco Act

The purpose of control and monitoring of tobacco is to prevent health risks and inconveniences caused by tobacco smoking. The supervision includes control of the legality of the sale and self-regulation as well as bans and restrictions on smoking. The most important point in the Tobacco Act is that no one should be exposed to tobacco smoke against their will. One of the goals of the Tobacco Act is to prevent the access of tobacco for minors.

The main points of the law:

  • Tobacco smoking is prohibited in public areas/common spaces intended for the public. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration monitors tobacco laws in the workplace.
  • Tobacco smoking is prohibited in all restaurants and serving areas.
  • Tobacco products and smoking devices may not be sold or otherwise transferred to a person under the age of 18 commercially.
  • The sale of oral smokeless tobacco (snus) is prohibited in Finland.
