Veterinary care

Veterinary care refers to the maintaining of general health and care of diseases in animals as well as other veterinary medical care. The tasks of veterinary care include the health and care of livestock and domestic animals, control and prevention of animal and infectious diseases, as well as monitoring and control tasks in the production of animal foods, from primary production to the treatment of animal waste. Preventing animal-borne diseases (zoonoses) is an essential part of animal food monitoring.

The central legislation regarding veterinary care is the Veterinary Care Act (765/2009) (in Swedish), which among other areas defines veterinary care, the administration, the municipality’s obligations, fees and the private veterinary care. Other legislation concerning veterinary care includes the Animal Diseases Act (441/2013) and the Animal Welfare Act (247/1996).
